Excellence Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

Not all resorts are created equally! I just returned from a wonderful 4 nights at Excellence Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa. This elegant, luxury all adult, all inclusive resort just minutes from the Cancun Airport is a little slice of heaven.

This is not the first time I stayed at an Excellence Resort, so I was curious if this experience would be as nice. Happily, the experience was even better, surpassing my expectations.

Upon arrival to the resort we were immediately handed a chilled cloth to refresh ourselves as well as a glass of chilled champagne. Check-in was very quick, friendly and efficient and then off to our room escorted by a bellman with quick explanations about the resort.

When we arrived in to the room, the air conditioning was on as well as some lights. The television was on set to the resort information station. Our room, a junior suite was spacious with their signature double jacuzzi and four poster framed bed. Also, a bottle of chilled champagne and a bowl of fruit awaited.

The above picture is the view of the fabulous spa from our room...not hard to take. The meandering pool lagoon feeds into the main pool where the swimup bar is located near the beach. The lagoon is dotted with palapas, pool beds, in pool loungers and floats. The main pool along the beach features the swimup bar and activities such as pool volleyball and aerobics.

After your flight, you may be hungry. You have a choice of 4 venues from which to have lunch, 2 of which are poolside. If you really want to be pampered, lunch can be delivered to your pool or beach lounge chair.

Dinner offers 8 venues for dining in addition to room service. Breakfast also offers room service or the choice or 2 dining venues. Oh, did I mention room service? Yes, room service is available 24 hours a day!

Remember the spa in the picture? This is an activity not to be missed! Take advantage of the aqua therapy before your treatment. For our first spa treatment we had the Excellence Treatment as a couple. This is a melange of treatments ranging from Swedish to Shiatzu to stretching. My second treatment was the hot stone treatment. Both were wonderful.

The grounds and gardens were very impressive. Beautiful plants and trees with fountains and iron sculptures created a perfect atmosphere. The main square of the resort featured a bar called Cafe Kafe and next to that an entertainment stage, the main theater and a wedding gazebo. Also in the main square, enjoy the Manager's cocktail party at 5:00PM on Wednesday nights. Not far away if pool or shuffleboard tickle your fancy, it's right there.

If you like to exercise, a fully equipped fitness center is available to all guests. Additionally, morning yoga and stretching classes are offered. You also might want to take a walk on the beautiful long beach and enjoy the perfect weather.

After dinner, enjoy the evening show at the theater. If you still have energy, the nightclub is open for your dancing pleasure.

Other activities on resort include beach sports like volleyball and soccer. A watersports area is at your fingertips with paddle boats and sail boats. You can also opt for water excursions for diving and snorkeling. Each evening a complimentary shuttle is offered for shopping trips to Puerto Morales.

Mexico Travel Advisory

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has officially recommended all non-essential travel to Mexico be postponed due to the latest outbreak of Swine Flu. If you are scheduled to travel to Mexico in the next week or two, below is some information you may need to know.

If you are cruising, you need not cancel your cruise. The cruise lines are adjusting their itineraries and they will not be stopping at Mexican ports. Some of the cruise lines are substituting the Mexican ports with other comprabable ports.

Flying to Mexico? Contact your travel agent with whom you made your reservation. They will know how to make the changes to your travel record. If you made your own arrangements directly with the airline, call them to adjust your flights. Here are just a few of the major airline rules for the emergency changes:

• Continental Airlines said it will allow passengers to reschedule or reroute their travel, without penalty, if they are scheduled to fly to Mexico through May 6.
  American Airlines also is allowing customers to change their flights without penalty if they are flying to Mexico through May 6.
  United Airlines is issuing a travel waiver to customers traveling to, from or through Mexico through May 6. The waiver allows travelers to make one change to their travel plans without change fees.
  Delta Air Lines is waiving the change fee for customers traveling to Mexico through May 4. New travel must originate on or before May 12.
  US Airways will waive the standard change fee, advance reservation and ticketing requirements for customers traveling to Mexico through April 30. Customers can move their itinerary up to seven days before or after the scheduled origination date, or apply the full value of the wholly unused tickets toward the purchase of a ticket to an alternate destination (new travel must originate within seven days of scheduled origination date).

Major tour operators such as Travel Impressions, GoGo, Apple and Funjet (just to name a few) are working diligently with their travel partners to accommodate changes. Just be patient though as there are literally hundreds of calls being placed so the hold time can be over an hour. One of our agents experienced a hold time of over 80 minutes to change travel plans for a client.

If you have returned in the last few days from Mexico and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, please call your health care provider immediately.

Do remember, this is a temporary situtation, one which will pass relatively soon we all hope. So if you are not planning to travel with in the next week to 2 weeks, hang in there. You may still be able to keep you travel plans as they are.

Mexico Travel

The past several weeks questions have arisen about travel to Mexico because of a blanket statement by the US State Department which determined travel to Mexico is dangerous. The statement really is not as honest as it should be. Travel to Mexico does not need to be frightening. Thousands of visitors to Mexico return safe and sound with great vacation memories.

Yes, there are areas in Mexico which may be less than safe for both tourist and Mexican citizens alike. That being said, there are areas in the US, probably in your own city, in which are not only dangerous to tourists but residents too. The US State Department statement is a blanketed statement, which points out areas where most vacation travelers are not visiting. Those areas are border towns such as Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua. Unless you are traveling over the border for the day, the travel warning has not great impact.

The popular areas such as Acapulco, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and others are just as safe today as they were last year. However, safety when you travel is also your responsibility. I was interviewed a few days ago for a Travel Industry magazine about my thoughts on safety. My most ardent advise is not to flaunt cash or jewelry, no matter where you travel. It is just not a smart thing to do, even when you are not traveling. When you travel, you don't want to attract attention to yourself and set yourself up as a target to be pick pocketed or robbed. Recently a couple who traveled told me the young lady's wallet and camera were missing from her purse. She told me she wasn't paying attention and left her purse open while on a city bus. Though she was saddened, she was more upset with herself for not being vigilant, citing she lives in Detroit and would not think about leaving her purse open there either.

When you travel, no matter where..Mexico, Europe or even close to home, take advantage of the in room safe deposit box in your hotel. It is there for a reason. Keep your money, passport and other valuables in the box when you do not need them. When you do go out, take only the money you need with you. If you are going to the beach, be sensible. When you go out to the water, have someone else in your party keep an eye on your camera or wallet if you take it out of the room. Also, if you go out for the day, separate your money into 2 different front pockets, or ladies, some in your wallet and some in your pocket. This will prevent others from seeing how much money you have. Additionally if you do fall prey to a pick pocket, you will still have some of your money.

Stay along the beaten path of the area you choose to visit. Don't go into neighborhoods where you may not be welcomed. That is true for anywhere you travel, even in you own home area. If you are an adventure seeker and want to see the "real" city, ask your hotel front desk or concierge what areas are safe and of local interest. Most of the time, these staff members are from the area and are most familiar.

Finally, don't leave your common sense at home. Be sure to pack it with you. When I read about tourists in a foreign country falling victim to danger, it is most because they left their common sense behind. Take advantage of some of the tips and you will have happy memories to bring home with you.
