Is The Travel Agent A Qualified Travel Consultant?

Yes, I know I have touched on this topic briefly before. Since this is an important topic for consumers I feel I must discuss it again. I am sure either you or someone you know was told you can become a travel agent for a small fee. Just pay $499.00 plus $50.00 a month and get all the perks you want. You can also make a referral fee too...supposidly $25.00.

So tell me, would you buy insurance from your neighbor or coworker if they weren't licensed? Would you want their advise because they said they joined an insurance club? Same with legal advise...would you trust the barrista at the corner coffee shop? So why would you throw your hard earned dollars away for your vacation to someone who is not qualified to give you educated information and find you the best travel solutions?

The authenitic, professional travel business doesn't really work like that. The problem is, the unsuspecting consumer might not know they are talking about travel planning with someone who is just not qualified to sell travel. A true travel professional has many qualifications. Amongst those qualifications:
  • Education about travel including, destinations, resorts and cruiselinesAssociations with nationally recognized organizations such as ASTA, CLIA, and IATAN (all bona fide agencies are registered with ASTA and IATAN)

  • Ask which consortium the ageny is associated. Check the BBB for the agency name

  • References and demonstrated proficiency in answering your questions

  • Before you discuss travel, find out about the travel planner. As how long they have been planning travel? Ask about their agency and how long it has been in existance?

If you hear the words referral agent, run...don't walk. The most well known "referral agencies" are known by the names of "YTB" Your Travel Biz), "World Ventures", "PTS" (Prestige) Travel, "WorldQuest, Inc", "Global Travel" and "Traverus." There are others popping up as we speak. Before you travel, don't trust your hard earned dollars to just anyone. Don't be embarrased to ask questions about the travel planner's credentials. A true professional will welcome your questions. I always invite new clients to check my references as well as those of my agency. I am proud of our standing as a professionals, not someone looking to make a quick buck and move on.

Protect your travel and your money. Professional travel consultants want to you to enjoy your travel and know you are in good hands. Please be sure to read the link below. It is written by ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) and explains all about bogus travel agencies. We want to you be informed. An educated traveler is a happy traveler! Look for the IATAN logo like the one above to be sure your travel consultant is a professional travel consulant!

Airport Travel Safety

Remember the good old days when you traveled by air, walked through a scanning machine and kept your shoes on? That all stopped when some idiot decided he could sabotage a flight by adding explosives to his shoe. Now, thanks to that genius, when we check in for our flights, we must take our shoes off. This adds to your check in time and makes your check in a hassle.

Well hopefully soon that will become a thing of the past. New technology called "MagShoe" created in Israel is now being placed in airports. So far, only a handful like Israel and India have the technology. It has been shown to the US and hopefully US airports will institute the technology soon.

The MagShoe is placed after the body scanner at the airport. Once you go through the body scan, you simply place your feet, shoes and all, in the scanner. Just a few seconds and you are on your way. Think how much time will be saved and how nice it will be to keep your shoes on once again!

Watch the short video below, just click on the link. You will want to travel again!

Mexico Travel

The past several weeks questions have arisen about travel to Mexico because of a blanket statement by the US State Department which determined travel to Mexico is dangerous. The statement really is not as honest as it should be. Travel to Mexico does not need to be frightening. Thousands of visitors to Mexico return safe and sound with great vacation memories.

Yes, there are areas in Mexico which may be less than safe for both tourist and Mexican citizens alike. That being said, there are areas in the US, probably in your own city, in which are not only dangerous to tourists but residents too. The US State Department statement is a blanketed statement, which points out areas where most vacation travelers are not visiting. Those areas are border towns such as Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua. Unless you are traveling over the border for the day, the travel warning has not great impact.

The popular areas such as Acapulco, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and others are just as safe today as they were last year. However, safety when you travel is also your responsibility. I was interviewed a few days ago for a Travel Industry magazine about my thoughts on safety. My most ardent advise is not to flaunt cash or jewelry, no matter where you travel. It is just not a smart thing to do, even when you are not traveling. When you travel, you don't want to attract attention to yourself and set yourself up as a target to be pick pocketed or robbed. Recently a couple who traveled told me the young lady's wallet and camera were missing from her purse. She told me she wasn't paying attention and left her purse open while on a city bus. Though she was saddened, she was more upset with herself for not being vigilant, citing she lives in Detroit and would not think about leaving her purse open there either.

When you travel, no matter where..Mexico, Europe or even close to home, take advantage of the in room safe deposit box in your hotel. It is there for a reason. Keep your money, passport and other valuables in the box when you do not need them. When you do go out, take only the money you need with you. If you are going to the beach, be sensible. When you go out to the water, have someone else in your party keep an eye on your camera or wallet if you take it out of the room. Also, if you go out for the day, separate your money into 2 different front pockets, or ladies, some in your wallet and some in your pocket. This will prevent others from seeing how much money you have. Additionally if you do fall prey to a pick pocket, you will still have some of your money.

Stay along the beaten path of the area you choose to visit. Don't go into neighborhoods where you may not be welcomed. That is true for anywhere you travel, even in you own home area. If you are an adventure seeker and want to see the "real" city, ask your hotel front desk or concierge what areas are safe and of local interest. Most of the time, these staff members are from the area and are most familiar.

Finally, don't leave your common sense at home. Be sure to pack it with you. When I read about tourists in a foreign country falling victim to danger, it is most because they left their common sense behind. Take advantage of some of the tips and you will have happy memories to bring home with you.
